We are looking for a Principal to join our recently launched Growth Equity platform focused on supporting later-stage, fast-growing companies establishing their positions as market leaders. The target start date for this position is Q3 or Q4 of 2021.

Position Overview

Become a part of the newly formed Energize Ventures Growth Equity team to deliver excellent returns across our developing growth platform and contribute to the firm’s reputation as the premier energy and industrials technology venture investor. We are a small team with an entrepreneurial spirit, and this role requires flexibility, a diverse skill set, and an ability to perform at a high level on multiple fronts. We are looking for a driven, hardworking, and experienced professional with a strong industry network to help us with deal sourcing and execution, as well as building and managing our growth equity team.

This position will report to a Partner at Energize Ventures. The Growth Equity Principal will support the investment team in building the pipeline, due diligence and investment decisions. The candidate will be responsible for building our investment pipeline, contributing to thematic research, and helping develop our network by building relationships directly with co-investors, capital market firms, and growth-stage private companies.

In addition to generating deal flow, the ideal candidate will conduct in-depth due diligence, develop investment recommendations, and manage portfolio relationships. We expect this individual to leverage their insights and experience to work closely with others across our investment platform.

This is a full-time position located in Chicago. The intended start date for the role is Q3 or Q4 2021.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and track the most promising technologies and companies for potential investment
  • Respond to and evaluate a high volume of introductions, including holding initial screening conversations with ventures and evaluating those opportunities
  • Lead due diligence process including product and technical due diligence, competitive landscape research, market sizing, financial evaluation, deal terms and more
  • Provide regular updates to Energize LPs on portfolio and fund progress
  • Support development of written and verbal communications materials such as insight pieces, blog posts, speeches or presentations
  • Attend (virtually and in-person when applicable) conferences and events to build out Energize’s deal pipeline and broader network
  • Author investment memos and related diligence documents
  • Perform comprehensive, in-depth company and industry research as well as complex portfolio and benchmarking analysis
  • Synthesize large amounts of information, distilling key insights to share with Partners

Qualifications

  • Strong financial analysis skills, including ability to digest a financial model, identify and judge key drivers or vulnerabilities
  • Successful track record of evaluating or operating within growth equity software companies
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate with investors and internal teams across written and verbal mediums; the capability to communicate with senior executives is critical
  • Enthusiasm for emerging technology, entrepreneurs, and startups
  • Strong personal brand and thought leadership in the energy, infrastructure, technology and sustainability sectors; ability to communicate industry depth to stakeholders
  • Desire and willingness to learn, give and take feedback, and challenge conventional thinking
  • Comfortable presenting and sharing various points of view on potential investments, including offering a contrary opinion

Prior Experience

  • 10+ years experience, with 5–7 years in operations and/or startups
  • Exposure to transactions in venture capital and M&A
  • Career experience in global energy, industrial, infrastructure and technology ecosystems
  • Relevant investing or operating experience at a high-growth energy/technology company is preferred
  • Experience owning a P&L and managing capital allocation and sales process will help this individual succeed
  • Experience around high-growth, digital technology companies, with specific experience evaluating and communicating the opportunity in venture and growth-stage software businesses is a plus
